History of SCE

1972

Keith Eastwood founded Street CraneXpress in 1972 to service and maintain Street Crane Co cranes. Its first premises were on Clubmill Road, Sheffield.

1978

The premises were soon outgrown and in 1978 moved on to its present site comprising a purpose built factory and three small offices.

1982

Work steadily increased and in 1982 the factory space was doubled.

1985

Street CraneXpress purchased Crane & Hoist Ltd who specialised in the supply of hoist units, jib cranes, gantries, slings and other materials handling equipment.

1987

The group took its first foray into a diverse market place when by purchasing Burnand Components, now called bxh, from Aurora Plc. Burnand Components was originally based on Shoreham Street, Sheffield.

1990

Burnand successfully purchased XH Electric, a similar electrical distributor based in Hull and carrying out the same trade as Burnand, prompting a change to the company name of Burnand XH. Two years later in 1992, a further branch was added in Scunthorpe.

1993

The group was at this time growing but we realised that the missing link was a Technical Department so, in 1993, Intertotal Plc was launched. Run by Andy Whitworth, with a brief to win more technically based contracts. Intertotal Plc became SCX Special Projects.

1995

Work steadily increased and we soon outgrew the premises and were left with a dilemma - move or expand on the existing site. In 1995 the adjoining premises were purchased doubling the site area.

1997

Growth soon overtook all of our expectations and in 1997 the decision was made to merge Street CraneXpress, Crane & Hoist and Intertotal. We continued to invest in plant and technology, whilst at the same time endeavouring to train and develop our loyal work force, to ensure that SCX continue to deliver the highest standards of quality. Our commitment to quality and engineering excellence is underlined by our continuing endeavour to work in compliance with and ultimately surpass, the requirements of the BS ISO 9001 standard of quality.

2001

In 2001, SCX added an access division manufacturing and maintaining building maintenance units and has successfully completed complex projects such as the Beijing Botanical Gardens and the Swiss Re's 'The Gherkin' building.

2004

A new Street CraneXpress branch was set up in Bristol to cope with increasing workloads and to better serve customers located in the south of the UK.

2005

In December 2005 SCX bought Integral Cradles Ltd, an access company based in London, involved in similar projects as SCX's access division. The Integral Cradles name was kept as the new access division of SCX and meant expansion of the company and a new foothold in the London market.

2006

The group was restructured with SCX as the name for the holding company of 3 subsidiaries: Street CraneXpress, Integral Cradles and Burnand XH.

2008

In early 2008 Burnand XH opened a new branch in Featherstone to enable Burnand to provide a better service to existing and new accounts in and around West Yorkshire.

In October 2008, SCX secured a new business acquisition of building access and facade maintenance company 'Guardian Cradle Maintenance Services Limited'.

2009

Integral Cradles merged with CoxGomyl, rebranding the company name to CoxGomyl Integral Ltd (now CGI Ltd).

2011

CGI and later Guardian Cradle Maintenance both left the group, but Street CraneXpress expanded further by splitting into two separate companies; Street CraneXpress which would continue overhead crane, service, repairs, refurbishments, modernisations etc, and SCX Special Projects which would focus solely on the more complex and challenging bespoke engineering solutions. As part of the expansion, premises opposite the Roman Ridge Road site were acquired for Street CraneXpress to utilise.

2020

SCX Special Projects left the group, prompting a rebrand to the SCE group, which now consists of Street Cranexpress and bxh. As part of the rebrand, the head office was relocated to Street Cranexpress' site on Tyler Street, which was subsequently extended and updated to exemplify the new brand and vision.
