The Role

Responsible for the strategic development and maintenance of the safety, health, environment, and quality assurance functions for the SCE Group, the SHEQ Manager will ensure that the products and services of the company meet the highest quality standards and exceed legal requirements.


Duties of the Role

Health, Safety & Environment

  • Drive and improve Health & Safety standards across the company meeting ISO45001 standards
  • Implement and maintain processes for identifying and controlling risks to health, safety and the environment both internal and external to the business
  • Ensuring that all SCE group properties meet health and safety standards and legal requirements in conjunction with the Fleet & Facilities Coordinator
  • Improve environmental/sustainability standards and where required meet ISO 14001 standards
  • Attend site visits where required
  • Carry out workshop inspections to ensure a safe working environment is maintained
  • Facilitate all forms of risk assessment and act as a final authority where a specialist response is required in relation to risk assessments performed by others on site
  • Lead investigations into incidents (including major incidents), accidents, near misses and non-conformance ensuring that all documentation is completed, and systems are updated.  Provide advice on root causation, best preventative measures and share lessons learned
  • Ensure the timely reporting of any relevant incidents under RIDDOR
  • Keep abreast of corporate, regulatory and legislative changes and advise management of the implications for the business
  • Management of BSOL
  • Deliver safety training as required
  • Provide support to the HR & Training Coordinator with inductions, SHEQ related training and employee wellbeing issues including occupational health and industrial disease
  • Produce and deliver strategic plans for health, safety and the environment taking into account corporate and customer requirements
  • Carry out regular audits to the agreed schedule, ensuring HSE & Quality standards are maintained and improved upon
  • Arrange and oversee external Health and Safety audits for all BXH branches, SCE Engineers and clients
  • Carry out the van audits
  • Develop communication strategies for all levels of staff, to include written information, toolbox talks and management briefs keeping all staff up to date with health, safety and environmental matters
  • Actively promote the health, safety and environmental strategies to drive a tangible improvement in safety performance and culture
  • Manage the Occupational Health reports and liaise with the HR & Training Coordinator on actions taken, appointments etc.
  • Submit a monthly SHEQ report to the SCE group board of Directors




  • Maintain and improve quality management systems meeting ISO 9001 standard
  • Produce and deliver strategic plans for quality taking into account corporate and customer requirements
  • Effectively communicate quality processes and procedures to employees
  • Develop, implement and review company policies and procedures alongside the HR & Training Coordinator and the group’s directors
  • Ensure that good practice is followed and regularly reviewed
  • Carry out statistical analysis and trending to identify issues of concern; assist in the creation, modification and delivery of relevant action plans and provide support for all SHEQ and functional processes
  • Management of suppliers and sub-contractors – including audits if neccessary
  • Carry out regular quality audits ensuring continuous improvement throughout the business
  • Arrange and oversee external quality audits
  • Manage the retention of all current quality accreditations, and work towards the attainment of new ones
  • Assist with tender/submission documentation


Skills Required


  • NEBOSH National and General Certification
  • Full clean UK driving licence.


  • NEBOSH Fire Prevention and Risk Management Certificate
  • Environmental Management Systems Qualification


  • At least 5 years’ experience in a general SHEQ role within a similar heavy engineering industry
  • Experience of Method Statements, Site inspections and investigations, auditing, compliance and maintenance of SHEQ standards, Risk Assessment, CDM Regulations
  • An in-depth understanding of and the ability to interpret SHEQ-related legislation.
  • Involvement in tender and submission processes
  • Good working knowledge of BSI ISO 9001, BSI ISO 14001 and BSI OHSAS 18001 standards.
